Requirements

Becoming a member of is easy and offers many benefits to therapy dog teams and facilities. Members receive ongoing support through a matching service to facilities requesting visits, insurance, identification tags and bandana for the dog, and identification cards for the handler. Additional bandanas, patches and other items may be purchased by completing an Order Form . Here's how to become a member. If you are:

  1. Currently Registered and Making Visits: Any dog registered with an International, National, or Local Therapy Dog Organization may become a member by providing a letter of recommendation from the current facility you are visiting on a regular basis.
    OR
  2. Currently Registered but Not Making Visits: If you have not as yet made regular visits you may schedule a time with a evaluator for an observation meeting at an approved facility. The evaluator will observe the team in action using the registration/observation test. Upon a satisfactory report, the team may become members.
    OR
  3. Not Registered with an Organization But Actively Visiting: You may schedule a time with a evaluator to observe you at the facility you currently visit. The evaluator will observe the team in action using the registration/observation test. Upon a satisfactory report, the team may become members.
    OR
  4. Workshop: Upon completion of our five-week Introduction to Becoming a Therapy Dog Team Workshop, the team must pass the registration/observation test. Handlers must demonstrate a global understanding of the needs of the elderly, the disabled and the young. You must exhibit appropriate skills to volunteer in a variety of settings. The dog and handler must demonstrate that they are working as a team.
    OR
  5. P.U.P.S. - Practicing Until Properly Socialized; Therapy Dog In-Training: This program is a new addition to designed especially for young pups preparing to become Therapy Dogs. There are a few special requirements and visitation rules that are specific to this program. Click here to learn more about requirements for P.U.P.S.
  6. Reading Partner Therapy Dog Teams: Current members of Dog B.O.N.E.S. may receive Reading Partner Certification upon passing the Dog B.O.N.E.S. Reading Partner Certification Test.

    Visiting:
    1. Once you become an Active Therapy Dog Team member of , you may arrange therapeutic visits on your own and/or request to assist you in matching your particular interest with a facility requesting visits, i.e. pediatric, or the elderly.
    2. will also contact members when requests by facilities are made in order to provide visits by our members.

    If a member chooses to make his/her own arrangements, you must let know the name, location, type of facility and name of contact person at the facility you are visiting. will send general information regarding services and visitation guidelines.

    Members are expected to keep a visitation log and to submit this log to with membership renewal.

    All members agree to provide services free of charge to those who fit within our mission.
